![]() ![]() ![]() Krug is no stranger to tackling dark and complex subjects graphically her visual memoir “ Belonging: A German Reckons with History and Home,” is an excavation of communal memory in postwar Germany and her family’s involvement in the Second World War. So it seems fitting that an illustrated edition of “ On Tyranny,” done in collaboration with the artist Nora Krug, has just been published this week. It has been like a map-the more I study its features, the more I understand where we have landed.” Trump may be out of the White House now, but the forces that sent him there have hardly disappeared from public life. As the New Yorker staff writer Sue Halpern wrote, in June, 2020, “For the past few years, I’ve dipped into ‘On Tyranny,’ finding it weirdly orienting at those times when I’ve barely recognized this country and its government, and when the vitriol and distrust that now cleave us have made me feel hopeless. For those who were looking for ways to combat the insidious creep of authoritarianism at home, Snyder’s book seemed to offer an informed and practical handbook. Trump’s Presidency, the historian Timothy Snyder published “ On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century,” a slim volume which interspersed maxims such as “Be kind to our language” and “Defend institutions” with biographical and historical sketches drawn from his deep knowledge of twentieth-century European history. ![]() In 2017, during the first year of Donald J. ![]()

![]() Clean, easily followed prose filled with fun new similes, with nary a Stephenie Meyer "flew like a bird" cliche in the mix. Which is a shame, really, since his storytelling abilities seem pretty strong. Seems more like a long-form cathartic lambasting of something the author finds personally peeving than a real attempt to tell a story. The story was fun, and just meta- enough to keep me interested, but it smacked too much of Croshaw's well-known hatred (to ZP fans, anyway, newcomers should be able to pick it up based on the dedication, though) of MMOs. It was a fun read, with plenty of smirks and one or two genuine laughs, but none of the full-out guffaws I'm used to from his work with The Escapist, and definitely not as much as comedic virtuosos like Douglas Adams or Christopher Moore. But, given my love for Yahtzee, I felt I should round up. That's gotta be the first time that's happened.Īnyway, I really find myself wishing for half-stars again, 'cause this is a fairly solid three-and-a-half star book. ![]() Oh hey, looks like I got the first review. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lapvona refers to the name of the village where the novel is set. ![]() We’re not in contemporary America any more but in somewhere like medieval Europe, and the characters aren’t “prettier than Sharon Stone” but proper old-school uggos, all tooth and gangle and belly. There’s more plot in Moshfegh’s latest novel Lapvona. Not that there was much plot: the novel follows a beautiful young woman marooned in her New York apartment, where she mainly watches TV and pops pills like they’re Pringles. The book was a hit when it came out in 2018 and had a second wind during the pandemic, when readers found themselves “resonating” with its cabin-fever plot. Has there been a better novel this century than Ottessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation? There might not have been. ![]() ![]() ![]() She decides to leave Mona where she and her warriors have been waging a guerilla war, and to take the fight to the Eceni heartland where it is needed most. ![]() On the sacred isle of Mona, the Boudica or Bringer of Victory as Breaca has long been hailed, now knows for certain that her lover, Caradoc – betrayed, captured and kept hostage in Rome – will never return to her. To string a short story long, a number of predictable devices are used to progress the plot. Instead, the new breed is too busy infighting in busy urban areas to care about how many buildings are flattened or people squashed. Why? Because the stiff old super-codgers don't like the way the new heroes have abandoned the moral high ground, where no civilian should be hurt and even super-villains deserve a chance at rehabilitation.
